Every day and every
night, police officers put their lives on the line to
keep us safe. To protect our officers and our community
better, we need more safety equipment than our current
budgets will allow.
As the (your
position/title) with the (your
department/agency), I am writing to inform you
that we need increased federal funding to purchase much
needed safety equipment, such as night vision, for our
field personnel.
We believe night vision
allows our officers to be safer and more effective when
carrying out the following duties: preventing looting,
conducting narcotics surveillance and other tactical
activities, as well as responding to natural disasters
to locate missing persons and perform search and rescue
functions.
Patrol officers use
this technology to see suspects in dark conditions
before suspects see them. This gives our officers the
advantage, reducing the risk of a deadly force encounter
particularly in tactical situations.
The U.S Congress
is currently focusing on being prepared for domestic
terrorism. As a rural community, it is essential that
our department be prepared with night vision in the
event of a terrorist attack. At present we do not have
the necessary funds to supply our personnel with this
type of safety equipment to prepare for the challenges
of the night. The sophistication of criminals is
increasing, thus the need to obtain more and better
technology to combat the increasingly advanced tactics
of criminals.
In one instance (describe
scenario and give testimonial of crime solved/criminal
arrests/narcotics surveillance/training success)
night vision proved invaluable and allowed our personnel
to successfully (task) while remaining
safe.
With support of federal
funding (your department) can
effectively and safely protect and serve our community.
